Anything goes

Do you remember the blond pretty girl singing at the beginning of the second episode of Indiana Jones? My capacity in listening/understanding English allows me to understand a bit of songs... but "anything goes" is a sentence I was able to recognize even when I was 12 and made my first steps with English...
This is not of any importance... I wanted only to remark something of a film I loved...
The thing that matters is that ANYTHING GOES!! Really. Yesterday afternoon I had a job meeting with an advertising agency in my city, Parma. I left my office here in Reggio Emilia two hours before the usual hour, took the car and tried to drive there. The street of the agency is quite strange, in many occasion you can drive it only in one way, and I got lost. I called my friend Vittoria, who works there, and she made me lose once more. Fortunately, one of her coworkers, Daniela, helped me. I got there, and the chief, Walter, was so gentle with me. Asked me only a pair of things (and I was trained what to talk about because of a training I made with freddieblues that yesterday made me a lot of questions. It's a tiny office, full of people, but it seems very nice. People cooperates there. It's what I need to grow.
They must call me in the next days. Walter told me it's almost sure I'm in. The only thing to do is to greet everyone here and to bring away what I have in this office. Few material things.
But I left here a piece of my heart, I can't take this one back.

I know EXACTLY the point in the movie you are talking about! Great old song.

So, the interview itself went well for you? That's wonderful news! How different would this be from where you are now? What would you be doing?

Which are the differences? Here I have to work for a mag, it means I have to neat pix, to transfer them from RGB to CMYK and similar. I also build some page. But the importantest thing is that I translated pieces from English to Italian, and that I had the occasion, a couple of times, to write my own features.
In the future, the place where I think I will work very soon... I'll have to find a place, obviously, that involves graphics. There they do any graphic work... sites, packaging, logos, 3D presentations, and many thing I couldn't ever wonder. They also make brochures and so on. It means... I'll become a true graphic, finally. Will I find an opportunity to continue to write? It would be great!

Sounds like a great move for you! Certainly a chance for you to expand your skills. Hopefully there will be plenty of writing opportunities, also.

Now, if only you could teach me Italian ...

Need to know Italian, G? Once I made a short English manual for my mom. Perhaps I could try to do viceversa... but you must give me a help explaining me everything about English verbs. I have awful troubles with different tenses, never know which is the one to use. I use a random one, or the one that "sounds" better.
And you could help me with Greek (read you know it, if I don't make mistakes). Remember a sentence in a book... "it's all Greek to me" to say it was ununderstandable... in Italy we would say "it's Arabic" (or Arabian? from Arabia...).
I love proverbs and usual sentences... perhaps you could teach me some in return!

Hmmm... why was my last comment anonymous? oh well.

Sure, you help me with Italian and I'll help you with verb structure and proverbs and sayings (though most of ours are what we've imported from other countries). Verbs are a mess. There are rules, but there are so many exceptions to the rules as to make it maddening. As for Greek, I read and write it with some fluency, but don't have much opportunity to speak it, so I don't know how current my usage is.

Here in Italy verbs are much more weird, granted! A lot of Italian people has not an idea on how to use them. Dunno how it works in US, but here literal ignorance is spread widely, even between doctors, even between journalists (I work with them, I know there are some who doesn't know a "polite" Italian).
I'll start to think how to articulate a brief Eng-Ita course. Perhaps I'll put in on the net, too, after you test its validity. Give me some time... plz! And make every note you want!

Literacy is a real problem everywhere, I'm afraid. Every little region has its own special mannerisms, which make learning the language even more difficult.

Okay, I'm ready when you are. :)

By the way, what's the time difference between us?

Now I'll have to pass a test... I fear I'll have to do it with applications - like Freehand and Illustrator - I haven't used a lot. Today I'll do my exercises, my homework, as a good pupil. No problem to do this, there's nothing to do at work... fortunately.

Wow. They still use Freehand? I haven't seen a copy of that in years! Illustrator I know pretty well, though. I'm using Illustrator CS. Do you know on which version you'll be tested?

Don't worry, I'm confident you'll do quite well.

Heard rumours Freehand staff has parted by Macromedia... can you confirm something, G.?
I know Illustrator a few more. Here I have Ill 10. There I suppose they have CS whole pack, it's a serious graphic agency! But they use almost Freehand.
PS I started to write your Course to learn Italian... I'll soon send you something... suggestions to improve it are a must, you know!

Hmmmm ... It's still quite early out in San Francisco so it will be a few hours before I can check on that rumor, but it wouldn't surprise me if it's true. There hasn't been a significant upgrade to Freehand in over two years and it really doesn't fit within Macromedia's overall corporate direction. I wouldn't be shocked to hear that MM's looking to sell it. The question then would be who wants to take on Adobe?

:) I'll look forward to the first lesson.
